NOBELISTS TO CONGREGATE AT THE TECHNION Not only does the Technion produce Nobel Prize winners, it also attracts them. Ten Nobelists will gather at the campus in May for the Technion's Nobel Laureates Symposium, in honor of Israel's 60th birthday. Topics of discussion range from the laureates' specific research areas to more general areas, such as ethics in science.
Also, the oldest living Nobel Prize winner, 99-year old Italian Prof. Rita Levi-Montalcini, who received the award in 1986 for her research into cell growth and how it is regulated, toured the Technion with Italian heads of academia on March 5. Prof Levi-Montalcini's trip was meant to promote solidarity between Italian and Israeli academia. Who are the Nobel laureates coming for the symposium?
TWO TECHNION-GUIDED STARTUPS MAKE NEWS Two Technion startups have made news for breakthrough medical products. Diagnostic Technologies, founded in 1994 as a co-venture of the Technion and private investors, has developed technology to help doctors identify women at risk for preeclampsia,a dangerous prenatal condition also known as toxemia of pregnancy.
A second company, Argo Medical Technologies, announced that it has developed a wheelchair alternative: a wearable brace support suit with motors and sensors. The device is undergoing clinical trials and is expected to hit the market in 2009. Argo, founded in 2001, joined the Technion Entrepreneurial Incubator Company (TEIC) in 2006.
WE WANT YOUR WORDS Spring is here and the anticipation of Israel's 60th birthday is heating up. What does this special time mean to you? We would like to hear your voice: submit your stories, reflections, memories or impressions of Israel and/or the Technion. Email your submissions to info@ats.org. Put "Israel at 60" in the subject line. Your submissions will be posted on a special Web site:
http://www.ats.org/Israelat60
At http://www.ats.org/Israelat60 you'll find - in addition to information on ATS events honoring the anniversary and your stories - a short film clip highlighting Technion's contributions to Israel's growth.
THE FIRST GIFT TO THE TECHNION Israel's Independence Day may still be more than a month away, but this Saturday is the anniversary of another milestone. March 29 marks 100 years since the signing of an agreement between the German Jews' Aid Society and the Wissotzky family (which started the now famous tea company) to establish the Technion. The Wissotzkys were pioneers of an impressive trend of philanthropy for the Technion.
SIXTY YEARS AND BEYOND: THE 2008 MISSION, MAY 14 TO 30 An ideal way to celebrate the Technion and Israel during this special year is to join the ATS Mission to Europe and Israel: Triumphs of the Past, Technion Innovations of the Future. Space is still available. Relive European history and Israel's genesis and see the future of science and technology at the Technion. View the action-packed itinerary
THE ECONOMIST PROFILES SILICON WADI A world leader in business and financial news, The Economist magazine is known for its insightful reporting and trend spotting. It should come as little surprise, then, that the London-based magazine compared Israel's high-tech cluster, known as Silicon Wadi, with Silicon Valley.
